February 2007

Rebecca and Rich Jarvis Family

Hello to everyone!!  Well, January has been full of puppies, puppies and more puppies!!  What a job that is to take care of 10 rapidly growing puppies!!  Richy and Brooklynn do most of the work with Michael close behind.  I took them in to get their shots last week and let's just say, it was an experience.  Thier mother was not happy with me when I left her home and had all of her children in the car with me and the boys.  But it all turned out ok.  We had to number the puppies with a sharpie marker inside one of their ears to make sure we didn't give two doses of shots to any of them.  We got the bill for heating the big building that we kept them in outside and about died!!!  If we sell all 9 of them (we are keeping one) for $100 as planned, we should come out just about even with the shots and the heating bill.  I didn't even count the bags and bags of puppy food we've been going through!  Oh, well!  I wouldn't suggest to anyone to have puppies in the dead of winter in Idaho, not that we planned it!!  We keep telling people that it wasn't a planned pregnancy.  Ha ha!!

Well, the kids are back in school and loving it!  Rich has been in town all month!!  And I am loving that!!!  We have had lots of good family time together!!  We have been working on getting our home more in order and it is a wonderful feeling!!  We have also started taking each ot the kids out once a month with dad and once a month with mom.  This has been a little tricky, but a lot of fun and very rewarding!!!  The kids especially love it!!   I love having the one on one time with each of them.  And it doesn't have to cost a thing.  Brooklynn and I went babysitting together and had good talk time on the way there and back and that was our date.  Richy and I went to lunch after I helped at the school one day, and Michael and I played for a whole hour together!!  Joseph and I also played early one morning when he decide that 5:30 was a good time to get up and get going!!  Silly boy!  Rich has been able to take the kids each out for ice cream and has had some good talks!!  He said when he was with Brooklynn, some lady was smoking and he made the comment that he will never understand why someone would do that to their body.  Brooklynn proceeded to tell him that she decided when she was 2 years old that she was never going to smoke!  Well, I guess we gotta start them young, right?

Brooklynn and Richy started their after school program today.  It is called Wonders of Clay.  Once a week they get to learn to make whatever they want with clay, fire it, and bring it home the next week.  They are loving it.  The class is very small with just two boys from an LDS family we know in it also.  Brooklynn has also auditioned for a part she wanted in this little school play and she got it!!  She is very excited.

Michael loves to work on "homework" along with Joseph.  They ask to do it every day as they see their older siblings go off to school.  They each carry around a backpack with a preschool book and crayons and a toy of their choice.  We think we have decided to keep Michael home for one more year.  So he would start Kindergarten in 2008.  He starts "official" preschool in the fall with a sweet mom in our ward who has done it for years.

Joseph did the cutest thing the other day, so I have to share!!!!  He brought me Brooklynn's stuffed animal that he loves and told me that 'the baby ' was dirty.  Then he proceede to bring me the changing pad, then the wipes, then a diaper.  So he laid the animal down on the pad, wiped it's tummy, and pleaded with me to put the diaper on.  Well, I did, and them he went and got some clothes.  We dressed it and then he scooped it up lovingly, and proceeded to snuggle with it all the way to his room where he wrapped it in a blanket, put it in bed, turned on the fan, had me turn off the light, and shut the door.  Then he said "Shhhh, mommy, the baby is sleeping."  HA Ha HA!!  It was soooooo funny and sooooo cute!!!  Well, I hope that someday he remembers how to do all of that when he is a daddy.

Everyone take care!!  Sure can't wait to read your letters and see pictures!!  Love, Becca

Mary and Mike Ferguson Family

The Fergusons  have had a pretty normal January.   I survived a week without Mike while he went back to Austin and worked for a week.  It was in the 70s when he left and then he came home to 8 degrees.  He got off the plane without his coat and shivered all the way into the terminal.   It has been cold and snowy but the snow melts quickly so it is just cold.  Mike went on his first 11 yr old Scout campout.  He said he stayed by the fire until about midnight and then climbed into a very low lying tent with two other men leaders.  He wore 2 pairs of socks, hat, gloves, jacket, warm pants, and a special cold weather sleeping bag.  HE FROZE ANYWAYS!  He said he got about 2 hours of sleep and that his feet were cold all night.  He was a good sport but it is definately not something he looks fwd to.  Somebody forgot part of the breakfast and there wasn't enough to go around so he skipped breakfast.  Next time he has to go I will pack more and maybe it will go better.

Katelyn and Brandon had an exciting swim meet in Twin Falls.  Katelyn dropped almost 8 seconds off of her 50yard butterfly.  She qualified to go to a regional swim meet in
Moscow Idaho.  We were proud of her.  Her girlfriend and neighbors came to watch and I think it was fun having fans cheer her on.  Brandon competed in his first 100IM he did great although he got disqualified on the fly stroke.  It was only his 2nd time ever competing in the stroke.:)

Lizzie is counting down the days until her 6th birthday (on Sat).  We are planning to go to Hagerman to an indoor hot springs pool.  It has a couple of diving boards, slides, a big log in the water to play on.  Mike just wants to do something warm.

Probably the most exciting thing that happened this month is that Mike and I made plans to go visit Mom and dad in
Scotland.  Katelyn has been researching Scotland for a school project and doing a little family history to trace our roots back to Scotland.  It has been a lot of fun to read about the country, people, and our ancestors.  I think that I could really get into doing family history.  I am just starting to dabble in it a little bit.

Brandon went to a baptism preview put on by the ward and he is getting very excited to be baptized.  His date is Sat, March 24th and is looking fwd to it.  Mike's mom is planning on flying out from
Alabama.  It will be the first time she has visited us in almost a year.  She has had some health issues this year and also does not like flying on tiny airplanes.  I will go and get her in Boise over spring break and drive back down.  It is sooo nice having Becca and Rich close by.  We are planning a temple trip at the end of February with them.  I can't wait to see how big the puppies are!

Baby Ben is cutting teeth and starting to pull up on everything.  He is still a red head and I am hoping it stays.  It would be fun to have something different!

Jacob got pink eye last week and some other infection in his eye lid.  He looked like someone punched him in his eye.  Poor little guy has had to have the eye drops and an oral antibiotic.  Even with insurance this has been a costly virus.  He tells me to take that bad, yucky, medicine back to the doctor.  he has decided that he is Green Lantern from the super friends and wears his green ring everywhere.  He has a cute little pose just like the super hero.   He loves being a sunbeam in primary and comes home singing every Sunday.  his favorite part of family home evening is being the "Ductor"  (conductor).  He is pretty funny at charades too.

Well that's about it for our family.  I hope you are all doing well and having a great start to your new year.

Love,
the fergusons

Mike and Rachel Guymon Family

Hello Fam de fam fam:

It was great to talk/chat room with you all the other week.  We love to hear about what you all are up to.

We are trying to stay warm here in Minnesota and succeeding as long as we don’t go outside!J  I am so thankful for a warm home and for a car!!!  How did the pioneers do it?!?  We haven’t had a ton of snow but it stays on the ground because it is so cold.  This weekend the high will be -3 degrees!

The kids are all enjoying school, piano lessons (sort of), and the various events of life.  Birthday parties seem to be a big deal around here.  Most people don’t do them in their homes; they do them at play places such as: the YMCA (which is big here), indoor water parks, bowling allies, etc.  Just last week all the kids went to someone’s b-day party except Braden.  Mason went to a “Pump It Up” party at the place that has lots of inflatable toys.  Amberly was invited to a bowling party, (last week she went to a swimming party at the YMCA where her whole school class was invited), Talia and Sarah went to a friend’s party where the parents took them to an indoor water park at a Holiday Inn 30-40 minutes from here.  What happened to the idea of having some kids come to the house and play games, etc.?  Talia and Sarah had a pizza movie night party and for Amberly’s b-day, she had some friends come over and they each made a gingerbread house.  The kids had a great time at all the different parties this month!

Braden, Mason, Amberly, and Rachel all had a cold that started the 2nd of January and lasted 21/2 weeks.  Amber’s ear started to hurt toward the end and after 1-½ days felt better, especially when I was able to flush out a good-sized wax piece out of her ear.  The next day (Sunday) Mason told me his ear hurt.  I gave him Tylenol and he went to church.  About a half an hour before church started Braden just started screaming and saying his tummy hurt.  I couldn’t calm him down so I decided to stay home so he wouldn’t throw up at church.  As soon as Mike left with the kids, Braden started pulling on his ear.  He had medicine.  A few hours after church was over Mason started running a fever and looking very sick.  His ear still hurt.  After a long night of painful ears, Mike and I took them to the doc on MLK day.  She said they both had an ear infection in the right ear and that Mason’s looked extremely infected.  An hour later his eardrum ruptured and yellow goo came out for about a day and then yellowy clear fluid continued for about 3 days.  Poor guy.  I felt awful that I made him wait till Monday to see the Doc.  I thought they might feel better like Amber!  Oops.  Now we are all done with medicine and feeling good, except Amber who got the awful flu and has been sick for a 7 days.  L  Spring, come quickly please!!  I found it interesting though that both boys’ ears started hurting within 2 hours of each other and both had the infection in the right ear.  Their left ears look fine.

Sarah was able to participate in the school’s Geography Bee, where she advanced to the final round within the school.  One of her questions was re the location of Grand Teton National Park, which she aced, of course!  However, as Rachel and I sat in the audience, we heard questions that we literally had no idea what the answer was.  Quite humbling.

Sarah and Talia are plowing through the reading or “Eragon,” though their enthusiasm has died down with the momentum of the book.  It’s definitely no Harry Potter, they say.  Amberly loves the Junie B. Jones series (and so do mom and dad).  Barbara Park is such a hoot!  Mason and Braded are best buddies!  It is quite enjoyable to watch them interact and play together, etc.  Yesterday was Mike’s b-day.  The big 37!!  He wanted roller blades so he could skate with the girls.  I also finally got around to decorating our bedroom and surprised him.  I finished putting up the last thing on the wall as he came home and the kids had to keep him outside for a few minutes.  I put the quilt on the bed Mom made us for our wedding.  It matches the blue walls.  I also put up a saying (vinyl letters) “All because two people fell in love” and put our wedding pic and all the kids’ 1st b-day pics below it.  It turned out cute.

That is about it for our eventful month.  We hope the new baby and pregnant mommies will continue to do well and stay healthy!!

Thank you all for your examples and we love hearing from you each month.

Love, Rachel, Mike, and fam

Jim and Rachel Guymon Family

January has been . . . rather uneventful.  We started it off with a bang by visiting the Olsons in Virginia.  They had a little suprise b-day celebration for Rachel, which ended up being very valuable seeing as how I was stuck at the school until 7:45pm on Rachel's birthday.  Has anybody heard of Boyd's Bears?  They have a huge showroom (a 4-story wharehouse, in fact) near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with a playground and other fun stuff.  They have all kinds of themes of bear displays, like a nursery at a hospital, the wizard of oz, Native Americans, and yes, Mike, even Nascar.  We came home and found a couple of Boyd's Bears in our collection of stuffed animals.  By the way, let me re-issue the invitation to all to come out and visit.  We're so close to sooooo much history, and only 3.5 hours from NYC.  We'd love to host anybody who wants to come out for a visit.  I'm still pulling, cleaning, and restoring teeth.  The family is good.  We're still patiently awaiting some good snow for snowmen and sledding.  It's been a rather dry winter after a very wet fall, although the last few days have given us some snow.  However, the cold temperatures make us more and more convinced that Arizona is the place for us.  We had a lot of fun visiting Rachel's family back in Phoenix for Christmas.  We're excited for the next Guymon reunion.  Hope everybody is doing well.  Take care!

Liz and Corky Clark Family

January brought BITTER cold to the Clark family here in Chicago.  We have been experiencing wind chill factors of -31.  That is COLD.  Needless to say we spent most of last month indoors.  Schools have actually been closed due to FRIGID weather.  Not ours unfortunately.  Liz has been dragging the kids out into the cold to pick up Haley from school each day.  We love the beautiful snow and look forward to sledding on Saturday but we are mostly looking forward to warmer weather.

HALEY:  Haley lost her first tooth this month.  She came home from school with a loose tooth and was determined that it would fall out by school the next day.  She really worked on it and came home with a toothless grin the next day.  After about 6 months of therapy on her eyes, with no major improvement, she will be having eye surgery again this month on February 22nd.  She is not happy that she has to go through this again.  We are hopeful that this will be her last surgery.  Please keep her in your prayers.

DONELLY:  Donelly is really blossoming into a wonderful big sister.  She had a little bit of a hard time when her baby brother was born but she has really come around.  She loves to give him hugs and kisses and help him with whatever he needs.  He follows her around and calls her "Donna lly-ly".  Donelly has finally expressed an excitement about learning her letters.  Liz tried to teach her months ago but she just wasn't interested.  Now she likes to work in her ABC book all the time.

REESE:  Reese likes to follow his sisters around and try to get Shadow to chase him.  His  vocabulary has just exploded and it is really fun to hear his new words.  (And a few signs too.)  He loves to dance play with his toys and watch CARS and "Looby-Loo" (Scooby-Doo) with his big sisters.

We hope you are all doing well.

Love, The Clarks

Ruth and Adam Olson Family

Olson Family: We all saw our first snow and Ruth and the kids had a
great time sledding down our hill in the back yard. Both times it snowed
school was shut down until 12: PM, which didn't mean much for Adam since his
classes are almost all in the afternoon/evening.

We found out that the gender of the baby inside Ruth is a BOY! Oh boy,
another boy! We have a trio on our hands now. Ruth has been going
through much hassle trying to get a midwife and have our insurance cover it.
We are paying a lot of medical insurance every month and it would be sad to
not be able to use any of it.

Adam has spent many hours trying to finish up this ongoing Cubase 4
project, teaching about software through online video tutorials (www.vtc.com).
He even canceled a weeks worth of classes to finish by the deadline of
February and still didn't finish.

Ruth has now handed over finances to Adam, she has taken over it out of
necessity the last 5 years because of the craziness of Adam's work and
study. Well now Adam is trying to catch up and has spent about 60+
hours trying to get it all together and makes sense of the madness while
still teaching and preparing for classes he has never taught before.

Ruth has been teaching the boys a lot at home and doing home school
hours pretty regularly. She has recess time and fun games with the kids too.
It is neat to hear them tell Daddy about their numbers, letters and Atom
is even reading a little. Joshua is working on his colors and for a while
mommy was beginning to think Joshua was colorblind.

The name for the new little one will most likely be Eliot (and go by
Eli). The very day we found out it was a boy Ruth was reading a children's
book to the boys and the main little boy in the story was named Eli.it's a
sign!

Mel and Shannon Guymon Family

Seattle in January - some pretty weird weather.  A few weeks of sun
followed by intense blizzards and ice.  These pics are of our house
during some of the worst of it.  One shows Shannon keeping toasty warm
INSIDE the house; another shows the rental car Mel used to drive home
from the airport (none of the cabs or buses could make it out to
SEATAC to pick up travelers, and the roads were too dangerous for
Shannon to make it down, so Mel convinced Hertz to give him the last
rental car so he could drive himself home - fun!).

We also got the piano situated - believe it or not it was hand-carried
up two flights of steps through our front door by four big guys - we
were very nervous watching this :)  Alas and alack, we brilliantly
stored all of our sheet music in the other POD which is still in
storage!!

Still settling in - have spent the last few weekends sampling the
local restaurants and culture and getting to know our neighbors.
We're lucky to be in such a fun area.

Things are hopping at Google, Shannon got promoted again and the
company is doing very well; offices are expanding and we just spent
two days on a company-sponsored ski trip.  Mel is still commuting to
San Francisco once a week, and will be heading back to Asia for a
few weeks soon.  He still can't talk much about what he's working on,
but suffice to say it's pretty cool.

Stephanie Guymon Family

January was a stressful month. Getting back to school after a lovely Christmas break is always hard, the break was just long enough to really relax but not long enough to make me miss teaching J I just love being home for the kids and being able to have our lives and homes somewhat organized.

Lynne and I met with the director of Special Ed. to discuss what we will do next year. We had been given the impression that we would be able to stay at Peoria next year, but that is not going to happen. Unfortunately, there is only one position for an MR teacher at the new school, which means Lynne and I could not teach together anymore. After much fasting and prayer, and several trips to the temple, I have decided to take the position of LD (learning disabilities) teacher at Liberty (the new school). I’m pretty nervous because I know those kids can be a real handful, but I am looking forward to the challenge. Lynne and I will still be in the same department and my sister might be moving there full time as well. I also joined “Curves” in January and have been learning to love working out.

Alex is still preparing for his mission and has taken a job at Sonic to save some money in the mean time. He likes the atmosphere (and the food) much better than Taco Bell!

Damien finished his last class of high school on February 8th!!! We’re all going out tonight to celebrate! High School has not been a great experience for him and he is looking forward to a break. He plans to continue working and saving his money and then starting at GCC in the fall. He doesn’t want to “walk” in his schools graduation ceremony in May, but we’re still planning to get graduation pictures and send them to everyone. He just wants to wait until the end of March when he gets his braces off J

Jordan is enjoying concert band a lot because there are fewer percussionists and he gets more “playing time.” He has also joined FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and he will compete in Technology related contests. This is a great opportunity to make friends with kids who share his interests. He is also asserting his autonomy by growing his hair long…

Mckaela and her soccer team won their league championship!!! It was the most incredible night. The kids had a very tough team to beat but they worked hard and had fun. I have really come to love watching soccer and wish it could be year round.

I love reading about your blossoming families every month and miss you all terribly.

Love Steph and Fam.
